Here performed by the world famous Choir of King's College, Bach’s St John Passion is musical masterwork and a cornerstone of Western musical art. The music is full of excitement, yet carefully paced, driven forward by the ‘turba’ (crowd) choruses. Bach shows his mastery matching instrumental colour to individual voices, notably the mournful viola da gamba accompaniment to the aria Es ist vollbracht.
