Murray Shanahan is a Professor of Cognitive Robotics at Imperial College London, and a Senior Research Scientist at Google DeepMind. His fascinating work tackles some of the ‘big questions’, such as the principles that underlie cognition and consciousness, the implications of artificial intelligence, and the singularity. Professor Shanahan is also on the advisory board of the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, which researches ‘breakout artificial intelligence’, among the greatest threats facing humanity. Excitingly, Professor Shanahan was a scientific advisor for Alex Garland’s brilliant and acclaimed film Ex Machina, which might be fun ‘preparatory reading’!
