(Reviews from 2011)
English Touring Opera’s 2011 production of this double bill of Puccini operas won high critical and popular acclaim, and pleased everyone who came in the door. Together they make an evening which is probably the best introduction to opera for those who have been shy, or those with whom you would like to share your love of opera.
Il tabarro (The Overcoat) is a dark, moving, film noir of an opera set on the banks of the Seine. James Conway’s (ETO’s Giulio Cesare, La bohème) production is passionate and subtle, sharply contrasting with the ebullient charms of Gianni Schicchi, especially in Liam Steel’s (ETO’s Patience, The Magic Flute) energetic staging.
A virtuosic cast, together with ETO’s much praised orchestra, are conducted by ETO Music Director Michael Rosewell. From the throbbing first bars of Il tabarro’s famous river music to the creamy sweetness of the famous aria ‘O mio babbino caro’, it is an evening of rich musical pleasure, and theatrical craft.
