Figaro is getting married to Susanna, today. But the best day of their lives is quickly becoming the worst, as their master, Count Almaviva, decides to humiliate and impoverish Figaro, bed Susanna, and at the same time turn his jealous fury on his own long-suffering wife. Enter a cast of complicating, sexually irrepressible, comic characters of all ages, and you have the most famous ‘mad day’ in all opera, hurtling toward evening, in a garden, where all passions are spent.
Mozart’s great opera, witty and profound, astonishes with musical invention at every turn. In Blanche McIntyre (ETO’s Tosca) and Neil Irish’s new production, set in a highly theatrical world of 18th century trompe l’oeil painting and period costumes, many of the roles are played by leading UK black and minority ethnic singers. This is sure to sharpen the storyline of power and its abuses that lies at the heart of the warm-hearted comedy.
Sung in English with surtitles
