Taking their name from Charles Mingus’ seminal long-player, The Blues & Roots Ensemble is a band dedicated to sharing the music of Mingus through live performances and education projects.
The education workshop uses Mingus' music as a catalyst for actively exploring the concepts of jazz music and of capturing creativity in music. The ethos of the Mingus Education strand is that music is the medium enabling people of all musical abilities to have voice to express themselves.
Using three players from the ensemble, workshop attendees will be guided through the fundamentals of jazz using Mingus' music to discover a range of themes. Elements of improvisation, composition and performance are all explored, guided by dedicated and experienced music educators.
