The Museum of Cambridge
2/3 Castle Street, CB3 0AQ Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
Join us for a guided tour of exploration of the fascinating fenland to the north of Cambridge, a manscape whose creation and survival depends on rivers, some of which were not there 50 years ago.
We will visit Earith where the two great Bedford Rivers start, cross into the washland between and journey up through the isolated village of Manea, scene of an experiment in community living in the 1840s. Then we travel along the Week Creek to the giant sluice at Denver, lunching at the pub where bargees from Cambridge took on pilots for that final dangerous journey to King’s Lynn.
The return takes us past the Ship Inn at Brandon Creek, where Enid Porter learned of the Tales from the Fens, the riotous village of Littleport and the magnificent Ship of the Fens.
And every step of the way we’ll be told stories of the area from local historian, Mike Petty.
Tickets (to include lunch) £40.00 for Friends of the Museum, £45.00 for Non-Friends
