Love Music Hate Racism at Strawberry Fair

We live in worrying times. The election of Donald Trump and Theresa May holding his hand. The spike in racist attacks. Islamophobia and anti Semitism. The attempts of establishment politicians to scapegoat Refugees and Migrants to divert attention from their own (in)actions. A media obsessed with stirring up divisions and distrust. Worrying times.

But this is far from the complete picture. Unreported by the mainstream press, a new, vibrant, anti racist movement is stirring. Hundreds of people are starting to organise, tens of thousands have marched against Trump, millions have donated to refugees.

This movement has been echoed in music. Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR) has been relaunched to use the positive energy of our music scene to combat racism, to celebrate diversity and to involve people in anti racist and anti Fascist activity. Recent weeks have seen artists as diverse as Green Day, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Charli XCX, Coldplay, Lianne La Havas, Royal Blood and Kwab all come out in support of Love Music Hate Racism. In Cambridge we hold regular LMHR gigs for both young performers and established bands. The tide is turning in our favour. Can you join us?

— Strawberry Fair is a wonderful multicultural mish-mash of influences from around the world. We dance together, live together, eat together, campaign together. And we can win together. Black and white, straight and gay, old and young, Muslim, Jew, Christian and Atheist, united we can make a better world.

Our stage is small but beautiful. It is by the river, a little bit more central than in previous years. On the day we will be featuring young performers from 12 – 4pm and then more established acts til 8pm. There will also be a campaign area with stalls. Please get in touch if you want to play, help organise or run the stage, sort out stalls, steward, donate funds or get involved in any other way. Strawberry Fair is run entirely by volunteers so please don't be offended that we can't pay you!
