WHAT IS GSS?

The Global Scholars Symposium (GSS) is an annual four-day event that seeks to connect, inspire, and challenge postgraduate students in the UK. Founded in 2008, GSS brings together some of the world’s most accomplished and promising scholars to connect with remarkable global leaders in a focused setting.

Now in its ninth consecutive year, the Global Scholars’ Symposium was first held at the University of Cambridge in 2008. Its founding mission was to connect Churchill, Clarendon, Commonwealth, Fulbright, Gates Cambridge, Marshall, and Rhodes scholars in an environment that challenged them to draw upon their wide variety of interests and expertise. In 2011, GSS expanded to include the Chevening and Weidenfeld Scholarships. In 2015, GSS expanded to all students pursuing postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom. From the beginning, GSS has been jointly organized by the scholars themselves from a range of fields and scholarship programmes.

GSS has been privileged to host many inspiring speakers, including the Dalai Lama, David Suzuki, Wanjira Mathai, former prime minister Paul Martin, Dr. Mo Ibrahim, Baroness Helena Kennedy, Dr. Joseph Nye, Dominic Barton, and Professor Jeffery Sachs.

GSS 2017: MIND THE GAP

This year's theme, «Mind the Gap,»seeks to spur the type of challenging but necessary dialogue that will be required to navigate the complex problems facing us in the 21st Century. Speakers will share their insights on navigating divides, identifying the most salient challenges, and building strategies and actions to overcome these barriers.

GSS provides a unique opportunity for all UK postgraduate students to hear from and interact with amazing speakers and world leaders while also sharing and discussing our own ideas. This conference is designed by UK postgraduate students, for UK postgraduate students. If you’ve never attended a conference before, this is great one to start with! If you’re a conference regular, GSS is sure to rate among the best.

SPEAKERS

We have an exciting array of speakers, including an Oscar winning screenwriter, a UN Representative, The Big Issue founder Lord John Bird, performance artist and transgender activist Precious Davis, Pakistani diplomat and activist Ziauddin Yousafzai, and psychologist Paul Davies. Many of our speakers will also be leading breakout groups and discussions with students, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to talk to them in a smaller group settings.

Additional panels will focus on wide-ranging topics, including deconstructing the ivory tower, climate justice, learning from past and current movements, representation in popular culture, authentic peacebuilding, and discussing problems and possibilities with the term “allyship,” among many more. Other workshops and small group discussions will help build skills to address gaps effectively and practice self-care through intergenerational and interdisciplinary dialogue.

Keep checking back for more updates on additional speakers!

SOCIAL EVENTS

Social events are an important component of GSS. There will be many opportunities to bond with fellow students at our Formal Dinner and drinks reception, other GSS-sponsored social events, and while generally exploring the beautiful city of Cambridge! More details to follow.
